Ron is a ten year old child, found to be much depressed and who likes to be alone most of the time. His parents are much concerned about his behavior. Through psychological intervention, it was found to be a consequence of learning disability. We may get surprised thinking how such characteristics relate to a learning disability. Children with learning disabilities may be having problems like
These children may have problems fully expressing themselves and using verbal and nonverbal language. They also may not be able to recognize the subtle hints that the other child is ready to do something else. Their interpersonal communication skills are not as finely developed as their non-learning disabled peers. Such characteristics keep them away from other children and children don’t prefer to include them in their peer group. They may be considered as ‘dumb’ and stupid by their peers. As a result the child may get isolated and may develop behavioral problems.
There are lots of things that can be done to help such children. Along with their academic interventions, they require behavioral management and psychological interventions too. Some of the behavioral management techniques include teaching social skills, giving positive feed back, accepting negative feedback, teaching discrimination etc. They may be encouraged to think one thing at a time, discuss their problems with elder personals and practice relaxation. So let us wake up and help in developing a better society for ourselves.
